On December 23rd, I received a call from the agency, a young woman who was newly expecting wanted to schedule a meeting with us, her due date was July 8, 2012. We were so overjoyed to finally have a bit of hope again. We scheduled the meeting for January 6th after we returned from a trip to visit Art's parents in Myrtle Beach, but not sharing a bit of our excitement as we were being cautiously optimistic.
On January 6th our journey to being Spencer's parents began. We had a wonderful meeting with this young woman who was very shy and quiet, we'll call her "D". We were all so nervous, and we had some quiet moments, but we learned a lot about her in that she likes to knit, bake, and read nonfiction. She has a 2 year old son who is very active and likes being a "boy". She expressed the desire to build a relationship, for us to attend a doctor appointment with meetings, etc... At the end of our meeting, she passed along a couple of ultra sound photos from her previous appointments. Art and I were in shock and absolutely elated, she liked us and we really liked her!
On January 25th, we received a call from the agency that we had been invited to attend an ultrasound Dr. appointment with "D", the appointment time was set for 10:00 am and "D" was concerned about it being too early for us to make it - UHH, I was thinking - of course well make it work!
On February 21st we drove to the Doctor appointment, Art and I were both super nervous as we were about the find out the gender of this Little Blessing. As we entered the u/s room, the tech said baby was being perfect and still, immediately locating the gender...it's a BOY. I remember as we got to listen to his heartbeat on the monitor, I had tears running down my face and felt so much gratitude towards the young woman for inviting us. What an amazing experience that we honestly never imagined we would get to experience. We went to lunch with "D" following the appointment and talked more about her wishes for openness going forward. We asked her if she would like to be a part of helping us to name the Little Guy when the time comes.
April 17th we had arranged to meet with "D" for a little while. She had just come from a Dr. appointment and sounded a bit frustrated with the baby's position being breach. At this meeting, I could feel she was a little less shy and started opening up a little more. We talked briefly about the birth father, a little about her wishes about the hospital. She asked us about names, if we'd had a chance to think of any - Art showed her his list :) We mentioned maybe we could narrow the list to 2 - 3 names and she can help us pick the winner. Art told her how he was calling the baby "Little Dude" for now. I went out on a limb and asked her what made her pick us...I felt so bad immediately after I asked it, but she answered without hesitation. She loved that Art was a teacher and that education was important for the Little Dude's future. She also mentioned that our profile was a little more laid back than most. (I guess we did a good job of showing who we are)! At this meeting she announced she's enrolling in school - I was over the moon excited to hear this news!
May 6th we received a phone call from "D", she had had her tour at the hospital earlier that week and was feeling pretty good after meeting with the Social Worker.
Over Memorial Day weekend, we received a text that "D" was in the hospital for high blood pressure, which we knew was a problem, but it startled us! I think she was ready for this Little Dude to arrive. We had been out shopping for our special gift that morning and searching for just the right little gift to give her as soon as we were legally allowed to give a gift of thanks. We finally found it while we were anxiously awaiting news to find out if she was going to be released. We headed home quickly and packed our bags - just in case. Luckily, she was released to go home to rest and everything checked out alright for her.
May 29th we had a meeting scheduled to attend a Dr. appointment, they ended up seeing her a little early so we missed the appointment, but we went to lunch after she was done. She said she'll be monitored pretty closely the next couple of weeks and possibly have an induction date set. She invited us to attend the June 4th ultra sound appointment - to which we quickly agreed! At lunch, "D" mentioned names and said she likes Spencer the best out of the three we had emailed her earlier in the week. I told her I liked it with the middle name Daniel - so maybe this "Little Dude" has a name!
At the June 4th ultra sound appointment, we met with "D" and her mother prior to the appointment. What a neat day it was. We learned so much about "D"s family history and so much more about "D" from her mother. "D" gifted us a photo album for "Little Dude" to have growing up, in it included pictures of "D" and her son along with pictures of "Little Dude's" birthfather and his family. She wrote up a family tree and included a letter for him to read as he grows up. We are so Blessed that "D" is so awesome, she really has such a huge heart. During the ultrasound appointment, we got to listen to his heartbeat again - so awesome. We did find his head was down and that it was getting closer to all of getting to meet this little guy.
"D" had another Dr. check up scheduled on June 19th, so we were anxious to hear about a possible induction date. On June 19th at 3:30 pm, I received a phone call that she was being admitted and induced in one hour, I immediately flipped out - it takes us 3.5 hours to drive to her hospital....sure hoped we would make it in time.
